More and more books (especially print-on-demand) are being released with “indexes” that are really concordances. They are just lists of pages which contain the keywords listed by the author.

You get the picture. Do you really want to turn to every single page listed, hoping to find the recipe you were searching for, and then back to the index to get the next page number?
Here are two indexes I’ve created for a couple of my favorite cookbooks. I’ve explained why I felt the need for a new index, and why I made the choices I did. Indexing is creative! While there are rules, an index should always suit the individual book and its audience.
